Interpersonal skills allow us to relate to other people in a healthy, respectful and constructive way. They include empathy, the ability to listen, awareness of other people and communication, among others, within relationships.

As humans, we have a deep need for connection: we want to care, be cared for, and feel part of a group. This connection brings us well-being, security, and self-esteem . But relationships are dynamic and change over time, and the quality of these relationships influences how we feel, how we act, and how we interpret the behavior of other people.

What are interpersonal skills for?

Interpersonal skills help us to:

  • Build, establish, consolidate and maintain healthy and positive relationships.
  • Improve our emotional well-being.
  • Promote empathy, motivation and commitment.
  • Manage conflicts constructively.
  • Feel part of a group and increase our sense of belonging.
  • Recognizing that we have an active role in relationships, that we can contribute and contribute.

We have a deep need for connection: we want to care, be cared for, and feel part of a group. This connection brings us well-being, security, and self-esteem.

When relationships are healthy, we feel happier, more confident, and more motivated. These skills also allow us to better understand others and communicate more clearly.

How can these skills be trained?

Working on interpersonal skills is like training a muscle: it takes practice, consistency, and awareness. Here are some helpful strategies to get you started:

Training integrity

  • Be an honest person: if you disagree with something, express it respectfully; you can say: "I think differently, but I understand your point of view."
  • Keep promises: If you say you'll help someone with a task, make sure you do it.
  • Be trustworthy: keep the secrets entrusted to you and do not share private information without permission.

Practicing healing

  • Actively listen with empathy: When a friend tells you a problem, pay attention, look them in the eye, and don't interrupt. When a friend says, "I'm tired of everything," instead of responding, "Oh, it's not that bad," you can say, "I understand, it seems like you're going through a difficult time. I'm here for you."
  • Don't judge: if someone thinks differently than you, try to understand their point of view before responding.
  • Set boundaries: if a relationship makes you feel bad, it's important to say "no" and protect your well-being.

Developing care, integrity, and sympathy helps us establish healthier and more satisfying bonds.

Develop sympathy

  • Trust yourself: participate in group activities, even if it makes you a little embarrassed.
  • Use humor constructively: Making others laugh can help build bonds, as long as it's not at anyone's expense. In complicated situations, making a respectful joke about what's going on can help you cope, get a different perspective, etc.

Improve relationships with other people

  • Ask open-ended questions: Instead of saying, "How are you?", try "How was your day?" to encourage deeper conversations.
  • Resolve conflicts by talking: If you have a misunderstanding with someone, find a quiet moment to talk about it and listen to their point of view.
  • Include others: If you see someone alone, invite them to join the group. This can make a big difference.

Interpersonal skills are developed as we move through life and interact with others. Developing caring, integrity, and empathy helps us form healthier, more fulfilling relationships. When we listen with empathy and communicate with respect, we build healthy relationships that nurture and support us.
