Is video game addiction a mental disorder?
The DSM-5 (2013) classification of mental disorders , published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), does not officially recognize video game addiction, but considers it "a condition that needs further study" and identifies what the possible diagnostic criteria for internet gaming disorder would be:
- A persistent and recurring use of the internet to participate in games, often with other players.
- Preoccupation with internet games (it becomes the dominant activity in daily life).
- Appearance of withdrawal symptoms when the affected person is deprived of online games: irritability, anxiety or sadness.
- Tolerance: the need to dedicate more and more time to participating in online games.
- Unsuccessful attempts to control participation in online games.
- Loss of interest in previous hobbies.
- Continued excessive use of online games despite negative consequences.
- Deceiving family and other people about the amount of time spent playing online.
- Using online games to escape or relieve negative feelings (guilt, loneliness, anxiety...).
- Loss of relationships, work, or educational activities due to their participation in online games.
